Stephen Ashton from Purley was celebrating New Year in Thailand when he was shot
A man from Purley has been killed while celebrating New Year's Eve on holiday in Thailand.
Stephen Ashton was reportedly shot dead at a beach bar, after being caught up in a gun fight between two local gangs.
The 22-year-old was at a party at a bar on Haad Rin Beach, Koh Phangan, when he was hit in the crossfire.
According to the Bangkok Post, Mr Ashton was shot in the upper body and was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The Post also reported investigating police later arrested a Thai man.
Confirming the identity of the victim, a spokesman for the Foreign Office said: "We are aware of the death of a British national in Thailand on New Year's Eve.
"We are providing consular assistance to the family."
Friends of Mr Ashton have paid tribute to him on social networking sites.
One friend wrote on Facebook: "Can't believe what I have just heard. Rest in peace big man, you will be sorely missed."
Another friend wrote: "RIP mate, taken far too soon," while another message said "Don't want to believe it. Still got photos of us on my wall from football and school. Will miss you mate."
