Families can collect emergency food parcels
A new food bank is to open its doors to crisis-stricken South Croydon residents.
The Purley Food Hub, a joint project between churches in Purley and Kenley, will distribute food donated by schools, churches and businesses to local families when it launches on Tuesday January 15.
Volunteers will hand out meat, fish, vegetables and other foodstuffs as well as sanitary items including nappies and washing powder at Purley United Reformed Church in Brighton Road.
Those in need can get a ticket for the Food Hub from care professionals and clergy which entitles them to a free emergency food parcel.
The food bank, which will be officially opened by the Bishop of Croydon Rt Revd Jonathan Clark on Saturday January 12, will initially be open two mornings each week.
Organisers have appealed for donations as well as volunteers to collect, sorting and package food, welcome those receiving parcels and serve refreshments.
