Six fire engines and 30 firefighters were called to a blaze at an apartment block yesterday evening.

The crews were called to London Road, Thornton Heath, at 5.10pm, where an unoccupied block of flats that was under refurbishment was on fire.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control by 8.49pm, but crews remained at the scene most of the night damping down.

A spokesman for the London Fire Brigade confirmed 10 percent of the basement was damaged in the fire.

He said: "A small quantity of brown and white asbestos was found in the building, which was taken into consideration when crews were fighting the fire."

The cause of the fire in under investigation.
