Firefighters were called to a car alight in Purley last night.

The crew from Purley fire station were called to The Grove at 9.40pm, where a BMW was alight.

Watch manager Dave Tarvin said: "We were called by a neighbour who heard an explosion which could have been something igniting.

"On arrival the car was well alight, but the fire was confined to the engine compartment.

"We had to use our main hose reel jet to put it out, we were down at the scene for about an hour."

The fire is not being treated as suspicious and it is thought an electrical fault started the blaze.

No-one was injured in the incident.
