Residents have vowed to continue to fight plans for an incinerator in Beddington.

At a meeting of the West Croydon Community Forum last night, residents and business owners agreed to step up their fight against the controversial waste facility proposed for Beddington Lane.

Waste company Viridor have already submitted plans for the project to Sutton Council, and a decision about whether the Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) scheme will go ahead is expected in April.

Paul Pickering from Stop the Incinerator Campaign, who have submitted a 40 page objection to the plans, told residents it was not too late make their opposition known.

He said: "Time is running out but it is not too late to sign the petition, write to Sutton Council and write to Boris Johnson."

As well as discussing the increase in traffic congestions, concerns were also raised about the impact the incinerator will have on resident's health.

Broad Green Councillor Stuart Collins said: "There is one of the worst standards of air quality in London around the area and if we have to bring loads of waste in from all over South London we have to bring more lorries, which means more fumes.

"The biggest slap in the face for Croydon and Sutton residents is the more we recycle, the more lorries they are going to have to bring to fill the incinerator which is farcical."

It also emerged many residents in Waddon and the surrounding area were unaware of proposed incinerator.

Gordon Ross also of Stop the Incinerator added: "We need to boost this campaign and get more signatures.

"The councils involved are putting wealth before health, tell your family, friends and neighbours about it because air pollution is not the solution."
