A story about a gangster granny and the tale of a boy who turned into a hippo have been voted among the borough's favourite children's books.

Nearly 1,500 children cast votes in Croydon's libraries to mark World Book Day.

The overall winner was Sara Sheridan's I'm Me, which also topped the vote in the under-fives category.

Tom McRae's When I Woke Up I Was a Hippopotamus was the favourite of five- to seven-year-olds, while eight- to ten-year-olds plumped for David Walliams's Gangsta Granny.

Teenage readers voted Malorie Blackman's Boys Don't Cry as their top read.
