One hour Southern train delays due to snow - travel warning in Epsom, Croydon, Sutton, Mitcham, Wimbledon and Balham

Early morning commuters were told to expect delays of up to one hour this morning due to overnight snow.

Southern, the rail operator for trains between Victoria and Brighton via south-west London, have warned of "short notice cancellations and delays of up to 60 minutes across the network."

The service, has caused delays to trains stopped at Balham, Wimbledon, Mitcham Junction, Sutton, Croydon and Epsom.

The Met Office issued an amber (medium) severe weather warning after temperatures plunged to below freezing in London and Surrey, with worse conditions in Crawley and Sussex, where the roads became gridlocked overnight.

Tailbacks of up to 15 miles were reported on the A23 between Crawley and Brighton, with some motorists stuck for up to eight hours.

In a statement this morning, Southern said: "Snow and freezing temperatures in the south east since yesterday and overnight are leading to cancellations and delays to train services on our network this morning, particularly on routes through Sussex.

"The line between Redhill and Tonbridge is currently blocked and due to impassable roads, we are unable to provide replacement buses on this route.

"All other lines are open but subject to short notice alterations, some cancellations and delays of up to 60 minutes."
