Croydon-born artist Tracey Emin was awarded a CBE last Friday.
The Turner prize winner who is of English, British Romani and Turkish Cypriot descent, lived in London for three years before moving to Margate.
Ms Emin is well known for her controversial confessional work, such as her "tent" titled ‘Everyone I Have Ever Slept With’ in 1995, and her unmade bed installation ‘My Bed’ in 1998.
She said: "For me this honour is a symbol of how art can change people's perception of life and view the world in a different way."
"Art is a great enabler it has helped me to achieve many things throughout my life and through my daily life to help many other people."
