Primary schools are set to receive a £700,000 windfall to go towards school sport.

Croydon schools will benefit to the tune of £755,600 after the Government announced it would invest an extra £150m a year in school sport.

The funding aims to improve the quality of sport provision in every state primary school in England.

Each school will receive a lump sum with a top up for each pupil and a typical school with 250 pupils would receive £9,250 per year.

Ofsted will carry out tougher assessments in schools to ensure the funding is being put to good use for sport provision.

More primary teachers will be trained to have a specialism in Physical Education.

Croydon Central's MP, Gavin Barwell, said: "Young people across Croydon will benefit from this announcement.

"This money will help to secure the Olympic legacy and support our gold medal winners of the future."

The Prime Minister David Cameron said:"With this new approach to sport, we can create a culture in our schools that encourages all children to be active and enjoy sport, and helps foster the aspirations of future Olympians and Paralympians.”
