Tooting MP Sadiq Khan met a group of mums bidding to save the Windmill One O'Clock Club last week.

Earlier this month the majority of Wandsworth Councillors voted to close the club, which is situated in Wandsworth Common, in August but parents and campaigners are outraged by the lack of consultation.

Mr Khan, along with Councillor Sheila Boswell, opposition speaker for education and children’s services, visited Windmill to meet with more than 20 mums to hear their concerns.

Vanessa Doig, a local mum who uses the club, said: "I feel let down by Wandsworth Council, who failed to listen to the people who use the club before deciding to close it.

"I am looking forward to working closely with other mums and the MP to fight to keep Windmill open."

Mr Khan said he would be working closely with the mums to make sure that the council looks at every possibility to keep the club open ahead of August.

He said: "There are plenty of alternatives available to the council and they need to properly consider these.

"I am sure we can find a solution that keeps the One O'Clock Club open and allows the council to fulfil their statutory requirements."

A council spokesperson said: "We welcome suggestions from the people who use the centres and will soon be consulting with them, and other stakeholders, about how to sustain some ‘stay and play’ provision while ensuring we fulfil our statutory duty to provide an additional 894 nursery places for vulnerable two-year-olds by September 2013 and a further 894 by September 2014."
