The 1950s were brought back to life on Sunday when a fleet of old buses took to the streets.

Three routes were back in action, 60 years after they were first created – the 234A, 234B and the 234.

The buses ran a free service through Selsdon, Purley, Wallington and Hackbridge.

Single-deckers were used on the 234A route from Hackbridge to Purley and the classic double-deckers ran the 234 route from Wallington to Selsdon.

The event was run by Country Bus Rallies, which annually organises classic bus running days and Red-RF, a group dedicated to London’s single-deck buses from the 1950s.

It was the latest of several events over the past six months marking the 60th anniversary of the RF buses.

Peter Osborn, the man behind the Red-RF website, said: “The owners of these old buses enjoy running them on the routes they used to serve, doing the job they were built for.”

Alan Charman, of Country Bus Rallies, thanked Transport for London for its co-operation and Arriva’s south Croydon garage for allowing them to use its facilities on the day.
