A British comedy that saw a Morden street transformed into a film set will be in cinemas next month.

Papadopoulos and Sons, set in the Anglo-Greek community, tells of a successful London-Greek businessman who loses everything and is forced to return to work in the Three Brothers fish and chip shop.

The cast includes Bafta winner Stephen Dillane, who appeared opposite Nicole Kidman in The Hours, Georgia Groome – star of British teen film Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging, and Ed Stoppard who appeared in Roman Polanski’s Oscar-winning film The Pianist.

Scenes for the film were shot in Morden in 2011 when a furniture shop in Aberconway Road was transformed into a 1970s chip shop, and the production’s trailers camped out in Morden Hall Park.

The film is Raynes Park director Marcus Markou’s debut full-length film.

He drew on his own experiences growing up in the Greek-Cypriot community of Birmingham when making the film.

Mr Markou reveals he believed Morden was “blessed” after it escaped last summer’s riots, which happened on the shoot’s second day.

He said: “I really think Morden was blessed because it was one of the few areas that didn’t get
affected.

“We had to stop filming for a time because people were worried and I did think that was it –  that was game over.

“In the middle of the night I drove over to the shop to check it was still there because I had an image of it being burnt down.”

Speaking of the film he said: “It’s one of those film that doesn’t get made anymore – it’s an old fashioned family story so I think it will appeal to families and ordinary people.

“And people are going to see bits of Morden they recognise on the big screen.”

The comedy drama has already won several awards at film festivals and was recently invited to be shown at the European Parliament for its portrayal of the current financial downturn and the effect it can have on families.

The film will be released in four Cineworld cinemas in London on April 5.
