The father of a young man who fell to his death from the top floor of a car park has demanded answers from the council.

Alexander Smokovic-Campbell, 25, died on October 30, 2012, when he fell from the 7th floor of the Gibson Road Car Park in Sutton town centre.

At the inquest into his death today (March 21) at Croydon Coroners Court, it emerged there were cameras on the top floor that day, but they were not on.

Father Colin Campbell, who was in court to hear Dr Roy Campbell return an open verdict, said there was a "huge part of the evidence missing" due to the lack of cameras.

The court heard how there was footage recorded of Mr Smokovic-Campbell sitting down on vehicle ramps on the lower floors, but no footage from the roof.

The father told the court: "How do we know there was nobody else up there?

"I can't build up a total picture of what happened that morning. I was the last person to speak to him that morning and we discussed what he wanted to eat that night.

"What was the reason for the fall? The walls on the top floor are dangerous, they are not high enough."

A letter from Niall Bolger, chief executive of Sutton Council was read out in court explaining that the walls had been raised in the corners of the top floor, but not on the other walls as the risk of people falling "could not be eliminated."

Sutton Council last year put a sandwich board saying "no pedestrians" on the ramp to the top floor to stop people.

Mr Campbell mentioned this deterrent in court, simply saying "what the heck?".

He said: "There are cameras up there but they are not operational. Nobody knows what happened when he walked up there. The height of the walls on the top floor are not sufficient."

Dr Roy Palmer, said: "I have nothing to help me at all explain his actions. There is a lack of sufficient evidence to say what happened when he went over to the parapet."
