A policewoman who negotiated with a man holding his ex-girlfriend and children hostage has been commended for her courage.

North Reigate and Banstead Neighbourhood Sergeant Karen Coyne, and nine other officers were honoured at a police awards ceremony on Wednesday for dealing with an armed siege in Great Bookham last year.

Investigating Officer Jo Murray, from Epsom CID, was also commended for her outstanding professionalism and exceptional victim care particularly during a case involving sex offences against children.

Sergeant Coyne negotiated with the man for five hours while police came up with a plan to rescue his ex-girlfriend, a teenage girl and baby trapped in the flat in Proctor Gardens in August.

The man set the curtains alight, put a gas canister in the microwave and was seen to knock the woman unconscious and put a knife to her throat.

Police who forced entry and Tasered the man were also presented awards by Surrey Police Chief Constable Lynne Owens on Wednesday.

Investigating Officer Murray was recognised for showing exemplary dedication and support for child victims through a trial which helped them to be able to give evidence.
