A woman and her son were lucky to escape uninjured when their dishwasher caught fire this morning.
Firefighters from Woodside fire station were called to smoke issuing, at an address is Honeysuckle Gardens, Shirley, at 1.15am.
A crew from New Addington fire station were also called to the scene and firefighters extinguished the blaze.
One firefighter said: "The kitchen was not extensively damaged, it was mainly smoke damage. The woman and her son were woken by their smoke alarm.
"Because of the type and amount of smoke the woman, her son and a neighbour who had gone to the property to alert them, were taken to hospital suffering smoke inhalation."
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
