Witnesses have described how a three-year-old girl was killed in a tragic incident this morning after her pushchair rolled into the path of a delivery van driving though a housing estate.

Police, London Ambulance and the Air Ambulance were called to Woburn Court in Wellesley Road, at 8.45am today.

The toddler was in cardiac arrest when she was taken to St George's Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 10.03am.

Several neighbours described how the buggy, with the girl seated in it, was blown into the road by the wind as her mum was locking the door of their flat.

A neighbour who did not want to be named, said he saw the child's mum giving her daughter CPR.

He said: "She was screaming "she's dead, she's dead", but I could see her lips moving. She was blowing into her nose and mouth.

"The driver was on the phone to the ambulance and he and his passenger were telling her what to do."

The family are understood to have lived at the address for two years, and the neighbour described the three-year-old as a "social and friendly girl."

The driver of the DPD delivery van, who stopped at the scene has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving.

A police spokesman said officers from the Road Death Investigation Unit at Catford Traffic Garage are investigating the circumstances of the collision.

Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to call police on 020 8285 1574.
