Boris Johnson is to press ahead with controversial plans to close front counters at five of the borough's police stations.

But a new front counter is to open in response to residents' concerns about the cuts.

Front desks at stations in Addington, Norbury, South Norwood, Purley and Kenley will all be axed, the London Mayor's Office for Policing and Crime confirmed today.

A Metropolitan Police custody centre in Windmill Road will offer a front counter during the daytime, in response to concerns raised by residents about station closures.

It is one of few changes to draft plans outlined by MOPAC in January.

The finalised plans leave Croydon with just one 24-hour front desk, at the force's local headquarters on Park Lane.

Detective Superintendent Richard Wood, Croydon's acting borough commander, said the change of status of Windmill Road showed residents' voices had been heard.

But, he added: "Police front counters are really underused now compared to when people didn't have the internet and didn't have phones.

"The world has moved on."

As part of MOPAC's plans, Croydon will gain 117 additional officers.

Addington and Purley stations will serve as 'contact points' where residents can speak to officers during set periods totalling three hours per week.

South Norwood, Norbury and Kenley stations will close to the public entirely.
