A respite centre for adults with learning disabilities will officially re-open on Friday, following a major refurbishment.

New shower, bathing and personal are facilities are now in place at Heather Way short breaks unit in South Croydon, as well as new heating and hot water systems.

As part of the 12-week long building work, new floor coverings have been fitted along with new furnishings, redecoration and improved storage and laundry facilities.

The centre gives families and carers the chance to have short breaks from their normal caring routines and ensures carers get some time off knowing their loved ones are in good hands.

Presently 50 people use the service, staying for one day or for as long as two weeks.

Councillor Margaret Mead, Croydon Council's cabinet member for adult services and health, said: "This is great news for people with learning disabilities and their carers.

"They now have a fantastic, modern, fit for purpose respite centre, which will enable them to get the care and support they need."
