Kingston scouts “made it happen” yesterday at St George’s Day celebrations in Tolworth.

Hundreds of Beavers, Cubs, and Scouts packed into Our Lady Immaculate church in Ewell Road to renew their pledges and celebrate the last year in scouting.

Kingston and Surbiton MP Edward Davey, (pictured above, renenewing his scout pledge) a Cub and Air Scout in his youth, said: “I thought the whole thing was great.

“The scout leaders are unsung heroes – they are amazing in what they do. I don’t think people realise how hard some of the scout leaders have to work.”

Kingston’s Mayor Councillor Mary Heathcote praised scout leaders’ hard work in her address, and told the scouts: “We are just all so proud of you.”

District scout leader John Bowman said 1,040 people paraded along Ewell Road. He said: “It was very good, we were very pleased with it.”

Coun Margaret Thompson, whose children attended 2nd Hook scouts, said: "The scout parade was really impressive, and always is.

"I am always amazed at the time and commitment the unpaid leaders give."

The 2nd Hook Scouts won the Bridger Family Trophy on the day as the most smartly turned-out in the parade.
