A man was injured after rival football fans fought at Norbiton station following AFC Wimbledon's relegation-escaping victory.

The violence broke out after Wimbledon beat Fleetwood Town at Kingsmeadow earlier in the day.

Crowds had invaded the pitch at the final whistle to celebrate staying in the Football League.

The British Transport Police were called to reports of a fight at Norbiton station on Saturday shortly before 6.30pm.

A spokeswoman from the British Transport Police said: “We received a report of two groups of men fighting at Norbiton station.

"Officers attended and found that a man had been struck on the back of the head, causing a cut which required hospital treatment.

"Police are currently investigating the full circumstances of the incident, which is believed to have originated on the stairs of the underpass on the London-bound platform".

But Michael Fisher, a Dons Trust founder member, tweeted: "How many arrests were made for disorder at Norbiton station yesterday where I met 30 @ftfc fans who felt intimidated?"

He asked the Met Police: "What video evidence exists of a person grabbing a traffic cone and bashing it against subway wall at Norbiton station?"

Mr Fisher added: "I await reply on incident at Norbiton station yesterday involving soccer fans: true supporters @ftfc but not Wimbledon 'fans'"

"Why were visiting fans from @ftfc not better protected by your officers? Poor crowd control on a tense day for @AFCWimbledon".

"I spoke to a number of Fleetwood fans, some of whom had children with them, and they were not causing any aggro."

Anyone who was at the station at the time or has any information should contact the British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40.
