Police are hunting a man spotted acting suspiciously near a four-year-old girl and her mother on Saturday.

The woman, in her 30s, and her daughter were walking from Headley Close, Ewell, on to Chessington Road at 12.30pm when they noticed the man in a small silver car apparently following them.

The man got out of the car and approached them just before Chessington Close but went back to his car when the woman challenged him, asking him if he was alright.

Police want to speak with the slim white man, in his late 20s or early 30s, who is described as 5ft 8in with mousey brown hair.

Detective Constable Andy Cooper, from East Surrey CID, said: "I would appeal to the man involved to make contact with officers as we need to ascertain the full circumstances surrounding this incident.

"At this stage in the investigation the motive behind the car following the two people is unclear and it may simply be a case of mistaken identity.

"But I would appeal to anyone who has any information on this incident to contact Surrey Police."

Police have carried out house-to-house enquiries and checked CCTV footage following the incident.

Anyone with information should call Surrey Police on 101 quoting reference EP/13/1720.
