A young girl has been rushed to hospital with head injuries after being hit by a car.

London Ambulance Service and the Air Ambulance were called to reports of a road traffic collision involving a car and a pedestrian in York Road, Thornton Heath at 2.09pm.

A spokeswoman for London Ambulance said three ambulance crews, London's Air Ambulance and a duty officer were sent to the scene with the first of their staff arriving within three minutes.

She added: "Our staff treated a young girl for head injuries. She was taken to St George's Hospital in an ambulance but accompanied by the doctor from the air ambulance."

Canterbury Road has been closed in both directions between London Road and Purley Way because of the incident. Motorists are advised to avoid the area.
