Every street in the borough will be inspected in the coming months as Wandsworth Council embarks on a major assault on potholes.

In the last few months, residents have inundated the local authority and the Wandsworth Guardian with complaints about the state of the boroughs roads.

The council has blamed the recent harsh winter, which it believes caused an unusually high number of potholes to appear in roads in Wandsworth and throughout the country.

Last year more than 6,500 potholes were filled, according to the council, with Southfields ward being the most riddled with 702 road surface defects recorded within the past year.

However the council's Labour group revealed that almost another 1,000 potholes, or one in eight, were not fixed.

In response, the council has this year ploughed more than £6.4m into its road repair budget, which has led to the creation of six special pothole and pavement action crews, who will be working to repair potholes and pavements, ward by ward.

Transport spokesman, Councillor Russell King, said: "We know where the problems are and all significant potholes and broken pavements will be fixed."

Wandsworth is responsible for 1,500 roads stretching over 360km with 746km of pavements, many of which were constructed more than 100 years ago.
