Six months and deportation for Iraqi

After he was rejected as an asylum seeker after getting into the UK on the back of a lorry, Iraqi national Bayer Ismail made a second bid to stay in this country.

But the Home Office screening unit in Croydon checked his fingerprints and he was arrested.

At Croydon Crown Court on Friday, the 28 year-old, of no fixed address, was jailed for six months. He admitted a charge of deception.

Jonathan Dunne, prosecuting, said Ismail arrived at Dover in May 2004 and was intercepted by customs officers.

Papers were served on him as an illegal entrant and later his application for asylum was turned down.

But he remained in Britain and on September 28 this year, using a slightly different spelling for his name, returned to Croydon to seek asylum for a second time.

His fingerprints were taken again and were found to be the same as the original ones taken on his first visit there in 2004.

The court also recommended he be deported after serving his sentence.
