Police swooped on Croydon last week as part of a London wide operation to catch more criminals.

Operation Big Wing returned on May 23 for another day of co-ordinated police action across the capital and more than 200 officers took to the streets of Croydon.

Arrests were made in Croydon for burglary, robbery, drugs, handling stolen goods and assault offences as part of the operation.

Twenty four people were arrested during the operation, which began at 6am and continued throughout the day.

There was a greater police presence in Broad Green and West Croydon as part of the operation.

Police also enforced a dispersal order in New Addington later in the evening as they looked to crack down on anti-social behaviour in the area.

Deputy Croydon Borough Commander Superintendent Rob Atkin said: "Operation Big Wing was about showing our communities that we are committed to taking robust action against those responsible for crime in Croydon.

"We focused our efforts to target those people causing the most harm to local communities across the borough - whether they be gang members, robbers or those causing antisocial behaviour which can have such a devastating effect on people’s lives.

"The Operation will have also gone some way to help reassure the public of Croydon that we are there for them after the tragic events in Woolwich.

"We will continue to have a strong and visible policing presence across the borough - particularly in busy areas - and we’d ask the public for their continuing support and calmness in the wake of what happened last week."
