Chime for Change brings host of stars to Twickenham Stadium

The concert on June 1, described as a feminist Live Aid (and also produced by Live Aid producer Harvey Goldsmith) was broadcast around the world, generating £2.8m for the Chime for Change cause.

Jessie J and Rita Ora warmed up the 50,000-strong crowd, but the message was not over shadowed, with short videos on inspiring stories or speeches from high profile celebrities in between the acts.

Gucci paid for the overheads to ensure every penny from tickets sales could go towards helping women around the world gain education and be released from poverty.

At times the juxtaposition of flashy performances and heartbreaking tales felt a little odd, but the correct intent was there, and the cost of tickets at least helped to go some way towards the cause.

However, J-Lo and Beyonce definitely stole the show – with J-Lo pounding out dance-inducing classics, including a duet of The Beatles’ Come Together with Mary J Blige, while Beyonce opted for empowering ballads – including a mash up of Dolly Parton’s I Will Always Love You and her own song Halo.

The final surprise of the night was an appearance from The Crazy in Love singer’s husband Jay-Z, who left the stage after giving his wife a happy squeeze and a kiss.

With the outstanding performances and strong speeches from the likes of Madonna, Salma Hayek Pinault, Ryan Reynolds and Jada Pinkett-Smith, the night was certainly something that will stay with those who attended for a while.

Following the concert thousands poured onto the streets, using the RFU buses put on and transport around, but many reported problems with trains.

Delays were worsened after a man was hit by a train at Putney just after 10pm in an incident that is not being treated as suspicious.

As celebs took to the skies in their helicopter fans tweeted pictures and commented.
