A man has been arrested after a motorcyclist died in a crash in South Croydon on Sunday afternoon. 

A 55-year-old man was killed in the collision with a car in St Peter's Road at around 1.45pm on June 9.

Paramedics and an air ambulance attended the scene the the crash, near the junction of St Peters Road, but the motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. 

Two men travelling in the car, a black Volkswagon Toureg 4x4, fled on foot following the collision.

One was later arrested at a nearby address on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.

He remains in custody at a south London police station. 

Police are looking to trace the second man and have appealed for witnesses who saw the crash to come forward.

Detective Sergeant Clay O'Neil, from the Metropolitan Police Road Death Investigation Unit, said: "I am appealing to anyone who was in the area at the time of this collision and saw what happened to speak to police.

"Initial witness statements have helped piece together the events immediately after the collision.

"We know two men were seen running away from the VW Toureg - if you saw them flee then please call."

A London Ambulance spokeswoman said: "We were called to St Peter's Road just before 1.45pm after reports for a road traffic collision.

"We sent two single responders in cars, two ambulance crews, a duty officer and the London Air Ambulance but unfortunately the patient was pronounced dead at the scene."

The family of the man killed have been informed and a post-morterm examination will be held in the next few days.
