A man due to get married this Friday has been left with nothing after his home went up in flames last night.

A fire broke out at a flat above Glitzy Nails in Terrace Road, Walton, at about 11pm last night.

Six fire engines from fire stations across Surrey were sent to battle the blaze.

Three adults and two children, including a young baby, were rescued from the building. Two people were taken to hospital by ambulance, but were not thought to be seriously injured.

Warren Mitchell, 42, who owns Chessington Tyres ltd, next door to where the fire broke out, said it was his brother's flat that caught fire.

He said: “My first reaction was 'where is my brother and his family' and secondly was to notify police there are compressed gas canisters in my shop.

"He is getting married on Friday and now he has lost everything. He had everything in there.

“They are all shaken and said to me 'save what you can'.”

Mr Mitchell and his son, who were at the scene, said they wanted officers to find the wedding rings in the property at the time of the fire.

At the back of the property, a bedroom and the bathroom were charred black.

Ian Pompei, from Walton fire station, said: “The appliances were called out at 11pm last night.

"There were 16 firefighters all using breathing apparatus.

"Crews were there from 11pm to 4am. After 4am, we were damping down.

“There is going to be a fire investigation and the crews will be supporting it.

"Police will be carrying out their side of things and officers from Surrey Fire and Rescue will carry out their own.

"They saved lives and properties as this is the type of fire that could have spread in to the roof and the ground floor.

"They did an amazing job of keeping it to one property.”

Mr Pompei was unable to comment about the cause of the fire.

Councillor for Walton north Rachael Lake praised the work of firefighters.

She said: "I went more than out on a limb protecting the services around Walton. I know a lot of these guys. They managed to contain the fire and keep water damage to a minimum, so the chemist was able to open this morning.

"The fire service, in its normal, proficient way, has handled it exceptionally."

South East Coast Ambulance Service confirmed it sent two response cars, with clinicians, two ambulances and its hazardous area response team to the fire.
