A man has been arrested following what is believed to have been an attempt to kidnap a young boy.

The "frightening ordeal" occurred at 3.30pm yesterday, June 18, when the 11-year-old was approached on Berry Meade, Ashtead.

According to police, a man put his hand on the child’s shoulder before telling him to go with him.

But the boy was able to get away to a place of safety.

A man in his late 60s, from Leatherhead, was arrested on suspicion of attempted child abduction a short time later.  He remains in police custody.

Detective Inspector Antony Archibald said it is believed that this is an isolated incident.

He said: "This was a frightening ordeal for the young boy involved but I hope the quick arrest of the suspect will help reassure parents that Surrey Police takes all allegations of this nature seriously and will do our upmost to protect children."

Mole Valley’s Neighbourhood Sergeant John Pearson added: "Understandably this incident has left parents worried about the safety of their children and unhelpful speculation on social media has unduly raised concerns but local officers will do all they can to reassure the community following this report."
