Cyclists will be given the chance to swap their saddle for the cab of a HGV to help improve their safety on the road.

Croydon's Safer Transport Engagement Team (STT) is hosting an 'exchanging places' event tomorrow (June 20), outside Norbury Fire station between 4pm and 6pm.

The even aims to show cyclists the dangers they face when cycling close to heavy goods vehicles, and cyclists attending the event will be given the chance to exchange places with the lorry driver to experience the view form the cab of a lorry.

Officers from STT will explain to cyclists the layout of several mandatory mirrors now fitted to lorries and will also highlight the vehicle blind spots.

Free cycle marking will also be on offer at the event.

Inspector Dave Monk from Croydon STT said: "The aim of Exchanging Places is help cyclists understand the dangers of being in the lorry driver's blind spot and to help them to position themselves more safely on the road.

"It’s important that cyclists are aware of the difficulties lorry drivers sometimes have in seeing them - even when they have all required mirrors - so that they can help themselves stay safe on the road."
