A man who died in a fire at a derelict building has been formally identified as Sylwester Mendzelewski.

Six fire engines from Purley, Croydon, Wallington, Addington and Norbury fire stations were called to a fire in Davenant Road, at 2.45pm on Monday, June 10.

About 35 firefighters tackled the blaze and the fire was finally brought under control at 5.50pm.

The body of the 35-year-old Polish national who was sleeping rough, was found in the basement of the former Croydon Sea Cadets building by crews wearing breathing apparatus.

A police spokesman confirmed his next of kin in Poland had been informed.

A post-mortem which took place at St Helier hospital on June 12, gave the cause of death as smoke inhalation.

Two teenagers arrested were arrested on Saturday on suspicion of arson and manslaughter.

The 14-year-old boy and 16-year-old girl were bailed to return on a date in July.
