A soldier who fought in the Suez crisis has been given a new medal by a charity after he lost his original one.

Allan Dellaway, 75, of New Addington, served for 12 Years with the Royal Pioneer Corps, during this time he was involved in the Suez Crisis in 1956, for which he was awarded the General Service Medal (GSM) and clasp.

Several years ago Mr Dellaway lost his treasured medal during a move, all he had left was the original ribbon from the medal.

He could not afford to replace his medal so contacted the Excallibur Unit to see if they could help replace it.

On Friday, June 7 in front of several members of his family, the Chairman of the Charity Excalibur Unit/Supporting Our Heroes, Des Read presented Corporal Dellaway with a GSM.

The charity also presented him with a commemorative medal marking his involvement in the crisis.

Mr Read said: "We considered it an honour and privilege to reunite Mr Dellaway with his General Service Medal, although we were unable to find his original medal, the sentiment and meaning are the same.

"This is part of what the charity is all about, not just helping those who are injured during conflict, but giving something back to all of those who have served for our country, from the past to the present day.

"Without the generosity of the people in New Addington and the surrounding areas, this would not be possible."
