A charity executive who helped save Wandsworth Museum has been awarded a knighthood.

Sir Michael Hintze, of the Hintze Family Charitable Foundation, stepped in to save the museum in West Hill, Wandsworth, in 2007.

A substantial donation from the charity enabled the museum to re-open in September 2010, and continues to provide funding for the museum.

Sir Hinzte and his wife Dorothy are also trustees of the museum.
Staff at the museum have congratulated Mr Hintze on the announcement in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list.

Neil Couzens, museum director, said: “Without the very generous grants from Sir Michael and Lady Hintze’s charitable foundation, the Borough of Wandsworth would, quite simply, not have its museum or the museum’s education service.

“The trustees of the museum, its staff and volunteers are extremely pleased to learn of Sir Michael’s well-deserved knighthood.”

Wandsworth Museum informs visitors on the history of the borough and its villages Balham, Battersea, Nine Elms, Putney, Tooting and Wandsworth.
