A man who was arrested following what is believed to have been an attempt to kidnap a young boy has been eliminated from the police's investigation.

The man, in his late 60s, from Leatherhead, was arrested in connection with the incident in Berry Meade, Ashtead, on Tuesday, June 18, in which an 11-year-old was approached by a man who allegedly put his hand on the child’s shoulder and attempted to take him with him.

The boy was able to leave the scene and get to a place of safety.

The man in his 60s was arrested on suspicion of attempted child abduction a short time later, but police said today that he is no longer being investigated.

Detective Inspector Antony Archibald said it is still believed that this was an isolated incident.

He said: "This remains very much a live investigation and I urge anyone who has information which may assist detectives with their enquiries to contact us as a matter of urgency.

"We still believe that this is an isolated incident and we will do all we can to find the person responsible and bring them to justice.

"Surrey Police will always take allegations of this nature seriously and will do our utmost to protect children."

Anyone with information should call the police on 101 quoting reference MV/13/2301, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
