A Royal British Legion club is set to be demolished to make room for a block of flats.

Sutton Council's planning officers have recommended councillors grant planning permission to a project to replace the Royal British Legion Club in Station Road, Belmont, with a block of seven flats.

The council's development control committee, made up of Liberal Democrat and Conservative councillors, will make a decision on the application next week.

The application involves demolishing the disused Royal British Legion building and putting up a four-storey block in its place with room for three parking spaces.

A similar application was granted planning permission last year but the new scheme varies it by removing plans to incorporate offices.

The council has received two letters opposing the application that object to the height of the building and the loss of local employment.

A decision on the application will be made at the meeting from 7.30pm on Wednesday, June 26, at the Civic Offices in St Nicholas Way. Members of the public are welcome to attend.
