The jury in the trial of two parents accused of murdering a suspected drug dealer in New Addington has retired to consider its verdict.

Cherri Gilmartin, 37, and Jason Lodge, 39, are alleged to have viciously attacked David Petch outside his home in Wayside, Fieldway on April 14 last year.

During the trial, which began at the Old Bailey three weeks ago, prosecutors told the jury the couple, of Uvedale Crescent, stamped on Mr Petch's head and beat him with a baseball bat before leaving him for dead.

He died four days later from severe head injuries.

Miss Gilmartin and Mr Lodge, who have eight children together - the youngest just a few months old - claim they acted in self-defence.

They told the court the Mr Petch, a dad-of-nine, launched an unprovoked attack on Mr Lodge with a baseball bat after the couple let themselves into his house through an unlocked door.

They said they had visited Mr Petch to tell him to stop selling cocaine to Miss Gilmartin's sister, a recovering drug addict.

Both deny murder.

The jury retired at 11am today.
