Staff at a Post Office branch in Croydon have gone on strike.

Employees at the High Street branch walked out at 2pm today as part of an ongoing national dispute over closures, job security and pay.

The branch remained open this afternoon but with fewer staff, causing queues to stretch outside into the street.

CWU union members voted for industrial action, which will also further walk-outs on Saturday June 29, in protest at plans to close 76 offices nationwide with the loss of up to 1,500 job.

It said staff at the 373 Post Office-run branches striking today had not had a pay rise in two years.

Dave Ward, CWU deputy general secretary, said: "This dispute can't be resolved while the CEO Paula Vennells remains aloof and absent from talks.

"We've had informal talks this week which allowed a good exchange of views and discussion on various options, but there's no change, no new offers and no movement from the Post Office."

The High Street branch will open as normal tomorrow.

Kevin Gilliland, network and sales director at the Post Office said: "We regret any inconvenience caused to customers by the CWU’s decision to take further strike action. These strikes are costing our people money and delaying them from receiving the first of three cash payments.

"Our plans to turnaround the Crown network are vital to ensure we keep these branches on high streets and in city centres across the UK.

He added: "Around 300 Crown branches will be part of a £70m modernisation programme to improve and grow services for customers, and in turn ensure their long term viability.”
