The union behind the Croydon bin strike has said the bin strike next week could still go ahead.

Workers were briefed at the Stubbs Mead Depot this morning that the three-day strike organised by union Unite on July 2, 3 and 4 was cancelled.

But Onay Kasab, the union's regional officer, said despite negotiations looking positive last night with Veolia, they have since stalled.

He said they were willing to pull the strike in Croydon if they received the right offer but that has yet to be put to the union. He added the point wasn't to go on strike but to find a reasonable deal with their employers.

Mr Kasab said he will be going down to the depot tomorrow morning to clear up any confusion surrounding the strike and will speak to workers.

He added the strike will continue as planned if no agreement is reached.

In a statement yesterday Councillor Phil Thomas, cabinet member for highways and environmental services said there wasn't much support for the strike.

He said only 36 out of 300 staff took part in the ballot, with the vote in favour winning by a majority of eight.

Union members in Croydon and Bromley voted to strike earlier this month in protest at the offer of a "paltry" pay rise. Veolia, which runs the service, had offered a two per cent increase, but the union wanted a rise in line with inflation.
