A bride-to-be has been reunited with her £10,000 engagement ring after it was handed in by an honest passerby who found it in the street.

Fiona McNaughton was in Wimbledon Village on Saturday, June 22, when her diamond engagement ring, given to her just two weeks previously, went missing leaving her heartbroken.

Miraculously the antique ring was handed into the police station on Tuesday after an accountant from Wimbledon found it lying on the pavement.

Phillip Ansell, 29, said: "It looked like a very expensive ring and I didn’t see anyone searching for it so I thought I would take it and hand it into the police station.

"Because it was quite a sentimental item, an engagement ring, I thought someone would have been quite distraught to have lost it.

"I was surprised to find it but not overly so because it can quite easily slip off your finger."

Dr McNaughton from New Malden picked the ring having trawled dozens of jewellery shops after her fiancé, Jonathan Evans, proposed to her while on holiday in Devon six weeks ago.

She fell in love with this antique art deco ring which was presented to her just two weeks ago and described a horrible sick feeling when she discovered it had gone missing.

On being reunited with her ring the 49-year-old said: "I couldn’t believe it - it’s amazing.

"He found it on the road and kept it over night and handed it in the next day.

"I spoke to him and thanked him so much.

"It made me think that even in London there are lovely people around."
