Teachers are to strike for two hours today over cuts and redundancies at Croydon College.

The rally will take place outside the college between 12.30pm and 2.30pm, over claims 50 staff have been put at risk of redundancy.

The union say the redundancies will create extra pressure for staff that remain at the college.

UCU branch secretary Margot Hill said staff also were opposed to student support services being cut.

She said: "Half of the learning support teachers will go and student counselling will go.

"In construction and in some other areas they are cutting more posts than are needed to carry out the curriculum."

Ms Hill said more action is planned for September if no agreement can be reached.

A spokesman for Croydon College said: "Following a ballot of members, UCU called for industrial action in the form of a 2 hour strike during lunchtime on Wednesday 26th June 2013.

"The strike action related to redundancies at the College arising from a reduction in central Government funding."
