Esher councillor Tim Oliver has been selected as the new deputy leader of Elmbridge Council, following the departure of Simon Dodsworth.

The Conservative group, which holds the majority of seats on Elmbridge Council, announced the decision on Monday.

Leader of the council Councillor John O’Reilly said: “It is an excellent choice. Tim is a brilliant colleague and we are delighted he will be working as deputy leader.”

Councillor Tim Oliver said he was delighted with his appointment.

He said: “I have been on the council now for some years and I was previously the group leader when we were the opposition so it is nice to have the appointment and to continue to support John as the leader.”

Coun Oliver was first elected to Elmbridge Council in 1999 and had four years out when he was elected county councillor for East Molesey and Esher in 2005. He returned to the borough council four years ago.

Following the resignation of Simon Dodsworth earlier this month, the role of portfolio holder regulatory affairs was also left vacant and has been given to Councillor Mary Sheldon, representing Hersham North.

Councillor O’Reilly said: “Mary is experienced in planning matters and is a very hard working councillor. She has not been in the cabinet before and I am sure it will be a very good appointment.

Councillor Sheldon said she was excited about the role. She said: “It is a challenge because there is quite a lot to take in and I am delight to be asked to take on this role.”

The portfolio holder for regulatory affairs looks after areas including planning policy, development control and land charges.
