The owner of a fast food takeaway in Putney has had his application to stay open until 5am rejected.

During Tuesday nights meeting of the licensing sub-committee, Wandsworth councillors turned down a request which would have allowed the What a Chicken takeaway, in Putney Hill, to remain open until 5am on Friday, Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Councillors were told that police and residents had expressed concerns about increased levels of crime and disorder if the application was approved, as well as major worries about noise nuisance.

Committee chairman Councillor Martin D Johnson described the application as "unacceptable".

He said: "There are many people living nearby who would have faced totally unreasonable levels of disturbance throughout the night.

"Some immediate neighbours might not have had a wink’s sleep for three nights of the week and we were not prepared to sanction this.

"Our role is to help businesses thrive and grow where possible, but our overriding concern must be to protect the public from the impact of overly intrusive and unreasonable commercial proposals."

Despite rejecting the takeaway owner's weekend opening hours request councillors did however give the owner permission to extend his opening hours by one hour on Mondays, from midnight to 1am.
