A couple from Walton tied the knot days after they lost all their possessions when their flat went up in flames.

Rikki Donovan, 27, and Amy Robertson, 23, went ahead with their plans and married at a ceremony at Weybridge Register Office, in Oatlands Drive, on June 21.

The couple, their 18-month-old daughter Arya, maid of honour Jessica Stanley and her three-month-old son Jacob were trapped in the flat above Glitzy Nails, in Terrace Road, when it caught light at about 11pm on Tuesday, June 18.

Six fire engines from across Surrey were sent to battle the blaze, which was brought under control by 4am on Wednesday morning.

Iain Pompei, from Walton fire station, said: “There were 16 firefighters all using breathing apparatus.

“They saved lives and properties as this is the type of fire that could have spread in to the roof and the ground floor.

“They did an amazing job of keeping it to one property.”

Kind-hearted residents pulled together to help the couple replace their lost possessions, including their wedding cake.

Shenaz Lake-Thomas from Lake-Thomas Cakes, managed to make the couple a new cake with just 36 hours’ notice.

She said: “It has got to be the shortest notice I have ever made a cake.

“I got a phone call on Wednesday lunchtime and they explained everything. I didn’t expect it to be that short notice. What happened was nearly tragic and I just wanted to help. At the end of the day, everybody should help and pull together.

“It doesn’t matter what the circumstances are.”

Mrs Lake-Thomas said the cake, which would feed between 80 and 100 people, would usually cost about £280 to make. The Ship Best Western Hotel in Weybridge also gave the couple a free hotel room for their wedding night.

Jayne Robertson, the bride’s mother, posted on Twitter: “They are both being so brave, considering they have nothing. Many thanks to everyone who has been so kind.

“I would like to thank the Ship hotel in Weybridge, for putting Amy and Rikki up on their wedding night. Many thanks for you kindness.

“It is nice to see the kindness shown when people have lost nearly everything they own in a nasty house fire.”

Other retailers including Debenhams, Boots, Wilkinsons, Sainsbury’s, Blue Bell and the Card Factory donated items to the couple.

The groom’s mother, Vivienne Donovan, said she “couldn’t believe that people had been so generous”.
