Shoppers can offload unwanted belongings and pick up something else for free at the first ever swap shop event at Surrey Street market tomorrow.

The Give and Take event allows residents to free up some space in their homes by donating items between 10am and midday.

From midday to 3pm, the stalls open up to browsers with all donated goods up for grabs for free.

The event has been organised by Croydon Council and its recyling provider Veolia.

David Floud, Veolia’s sustainability officer for South London, said: “These are great events for Veolia to show our support for our local community. We may be a large company, but we like think local too. I hope that everyone who comes finds something they will enjoy.”

Joanna Dixon-Fillingham, community recycling officer at Croydon Council, said: “The Give and Take day is a great opportunity to have a spring clean and clear out those items you no longer need, whilst seeing if there’s something that might appeal which you can pick up for free.

"It all helps to reduce the amount sent to landfill whilst there could be someone who would really appreciate the items you no longer need – whilst you could get something fantastic for free."
