As the weather heats up, Michelin-star chef Raymond Blanc has urged people to get composting to make a positive difference to the environment.

Surrey County Council has sold nearly 14,000 compost bins as part of its discounted bin scheme in the past four years, which has helped to stop more than 8,000 tonnes of waste being disposed of.

Mr Blanc said: “The summer months are a good time of year to either start or keep composting because there’s lots of material which can be thrown into the compost bin like grass cuttings and salad scraps from barbecue or torn up cardboard from packaging sleeves.

“I’d encourage anyone with a garden to give composting a go.”

Surrey County Councillor John Furey said the council’s campaign promotes the importance of composting, which is quick and easy to do.
