The borough's aspiring spots stars sizzled at the London Youth Games finals at the weekend.

More than 200 Sutton athletes took part in the event in Crystal Palace with the Sutton girls' squash team, made up of girls from Wallington High School, scooping a gold medal among the highlights.

Other successes included the badminton team getting silver, the boys' basketball team getting bronze and the girls' table tennis team getting bronze.

The weekend was the culmination of months of competition in which Sutton won a gold in the girls' judo and a silver in the boys' disabled swimming.

More than 500 young Sutton athletes took part in the games with many winning individual medals over the weekend. In the end, Sutton's team came 14th out of the 33 London boroughs.

Councillor Jill Whitehead, chairwoman of Sutton Council's environment and neighbourhoods committee, said: "Last summer’s Olympics  and Paralympic Games left a sporting legacy that is second to none and now our young people are taking on the baton for sporting success of their own. I’d like to congratulate all those who took part in this year’s London Youth Games."

Cheam Olympic gold medallist Joanna Rowsell also made an appearance at the event, opening proceedings by lighting a flame during a ceremony.
