A grandmother’s treasured rings, given to her by her late husband, were stolen by men posing as officials from the water board.

An opal engagement ring was one a number of pieces of jewellery stolen from the 91-year-old woman’s home in Shirley Road, Wallington, on Sunday, July 7, at 9.30pm.

Two men talked their way into her home and stole £70 in cash and jewellery, including three rings of great sentimental value.

The victim’s granddaughter, Emma Cassidy, said: “I am simply appalled and deeply saddened that my grandmother’s home was invaded in this despicable manner.

“The rings that have been taken from her were highly treasured and are irreplaceable and she has been left devastated by their loss.

“I would implore residents in the surrounding area to be extra vigilant and ensure elderly or vulnerable neighbours are taking appropriate security measures so they are not targeted by these heartless conmen.”

The thieves took a Victorian gold engagement ring with an opal stone with three diamonds either side, a gold band wedding ring and a gold eternity ring with five diamonds in a row.

One of the suspects is described as white, aged 20-21, 5ft 1in and of slim build. He had short fair hair, was clean shaven, and had a pale complexion. He was wearing a stone-coloured jacket and light coloured tracksuit.

The other man is described as white, aged 45-50, 5ft 7in, and of stocky build. He had short, mousey coloured hair and was clean shaven. He was wearing a navy or black coloured anorak and similarly dark trousers.
