Three men with scarves across their faces were spotted trying to burgle a property in Epsom yesterday.
Someone caught the burglars in the act and called police, but the men escaped before officers arrived on the scene in Cheam Road at about 11am.
Although it is thought the men fled empty-handed, they damaged a door made of very strong plastic.
Damage has been valued at several hundred pounds.
The three slim Eastern European men are in their early to mid-30s and wore smart casual dark clothes.
Detective Constable Steph Worrell said: "The offenders left the scene in a vehicle which was believed to have been parked illegally on Queensmead Road and I would like to hear from anyone who saw anything suspicious.
"I would also like to speak to anyone who saw three men acting suspiciously in the area around the time of the incident."
Anyone with information should call Surrey Police on 101, quoting reference EP/13/2910, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
