Wandsworth Council's attempt to solve the borough's mounting pothole problem has entered its third month.

A harsh winter led to an unusally high rate of damaged roads and since then the local authority's specialist repair crews have now filled in 1,393 potholes in five wards.

This equates to just under 300 in each ward and with 15 more wards to complete, the crews have a lot more work to do.

The wards already tackled include 328 in West Putney, 224 in Wandsworth Common, 192 in St Mary's Park, 401 in Furzedown and 218 in Southfields.

And next on the council's radar are Queenstown, Northcote and Shaftesbury wards along with Balham, Fairfield and Thamesfield.

Previously they have carried out repairs in Earlsfield, Nightingale, West Hill, Bedford and Latchmere.

The council is promising that every street in the borough will be inspected after increasing its road repair budget to £6.4m this year.

Leaflets will be sent to homes across the borough to let people know when the repair crews will be working in their neighbourhoods.

Wandsworth is responsible for 1,500 roads stretching over 360km with 746km of pavements, many of which were constructed more than 100 years ago.
