A man has who subjected his neighbour to verbal and racial abuse has been jailed for eight months.

Mohammad Habbab of Nelson Close, Croydon, was also made subject of a restraining order for five years and ordered to pay £100 to the victim, a 39-year-old woman.

As well as verbally and racially abusing his neighbour the 61-year-old also threw bottles at their window, Croydon Crown Court heard.

Last summer, Broad Green Safer Neighbourhoods Team were alerted to Habbab's anti-social behaviour, but despite efforts to try and engage with him, he continued to behave negatively towards his neighbours.

On August 21, last year police were called to reports Habbab was shouting racist remarks at his neighbour.

Police investigated and he was arrested on October 4, and later charged with racially aggravated harassment.

However, while on bail awaiting trial, Habbab continued to verbally and racially abuse the victim, some of which she recorded on her mobile phone.

Habbab was arrested again on February 20, 2013 and further charged with racially aggravated harassment. A jury took just 20 minutes to convict him of both counts.

Habbab who was living in a council-owned property, was served a Notice of Seeking Possession by Croydon Council on March 15. He was eventually evicted from the address on June 28.

Detective Constable Sue Day-Sawyer said: "Throughout the whole process, Habbab has refused to engage with any of the agencies that have tried to resolve issues between him and his neighbours.

"His behaviour towards the victim and his other neighbours was despicable.

"The sentence should send a strong message that this sort of behaviour is not acceptable and that we, along with our partners will take positive action to deal with it."
